At least 531 women have become pregnant despite undergoing permanent birth control operation in Orissa.
This was revealed by Health and Family Welfare Minister Prasanna Acharya in the Assembly in a written reply to a question from Bhimsen Choudhury (Ind). However, the Government did not feel it necessary to take action against any doctor for fault in conducting tubectomy surgery, the Minister said.

As many as 6,00,369 women underwent family planning operation between 2006-07 and 2010-11 in the State, he said adding that out of 531 women, who conceived again, 236 were given compensations by different insurance companies.
The compensations were given by insurance companies under Central Government’s Family Welfare Insurance Scheme as per a direction of the Supreme Court, he said.
The Minister, however, assured the House that the government would not hesitate to take action against the doctors if they were found guilty in performing family planning operation.
