"We have decided to part ways after I was asked to do so. I was surprised at the speed of the development," said Ahmed, adding he was yet to finalise his future assignment.
A Max Healthcare spokesperson said the company has formed an interim task-force to conduct day-to-day operations and manage the transition. The task-force will be co-chaired by promoter and Max India Group chairman Analjit Singh and Max India MD Rahul Khosla.
The company is evaluating options to get a new leadership structure and Dr Ahmed remains available to facilitate a smooth transition, the company said in a statement
The exact reason for Ahmed's exit is not known. According to a person familiar with the matter, differences over running the hospital chain was one of the reasons for Ahmed's departure. He resigned on Monday. A person close to the management said there were no differences. The industry has seen instances of differences between doctors and promoters over managing hospitals resulting in skirmishes and eventual parting of ways.
In 2007, Dr Naresh Trehan was sacked from Escorts Heart Institute soon after the Singh brothers-Malvinder and Shivinder-took over the hospital. They later bought out Trehan's 10% stake. Trehan joined arch rival Apollo Hospitals, before starting his own hospital Medanta.
Last year, Artemis Health Sciences CEO Kushagra Kataria fell out with Onkar Kanwar, the promoter of Artemis.
