OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :

To strengthen public health capacity in communicable diseases preparedness and response to potential pandemics, with particular reference to core capacities required, for implementation of the International Health Regulations (2005) in the Member States of South-East Asia Region.

Description of duties:

Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Director, CDS and also under the supervision/ collaboration of the Regional Adviser and other DSE Staff, the incumbent will have the following duties to:

1. Provide technical assistance for planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating interventions related to prevention and control of communicable diseases, particularly of public health events of international concern.

2. Provide technical assistance to countries related to IHR core capacities in the context of IHR (2005) for assessment of capacities and strengthening interventions required.

3. Assist in developing standard operating procedures, training materials and guidelines in strengthening core capacity for rapid response to public health emergencies, including emerging infectious diseases and other public health events.

4. Assist in resource mobilization in all the areas pertaining to disease surveillance and epidemiology,

5. Undertake any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Essential: Degree in Medicine or Health-related Sciences with Postgraduate Degree in Public Health

Desirable: Familiarity with WHO policies and practices. Capability in programme planning, development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.


Skills:

Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of communicable disease surveillance, prevention and control. Experience in planning, management and coordinating international health programmes. Knowledge and use of personal computers, word processing, spread sheets, epidemiological software.

Desirable: Experience in communicable disease control, particularly in emerging and re-emerging diseases and public health emergencies.

Other Skills (i.e. IT skills): Computer literacy, particularly related to computer applications as a management tool. Proven ability to write technical documents in a precise manner.

Experience:

Minimum seven years of professional experience in the development and implementation of health programmes at national level, including at least three years of international working experience in the area of communicable disease control.

Desirable: Working experience with WHO is an asset.


Annual salary: (Net of tax)

US$ 67,395 at single rate
US$ 72,373 with primary dependants Post Adjustment: 41.4 % of the above figure(s). This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
