Kalinga Hospital is the first private sector corporate hospital in Orissa. The commencement of Kalinga Hospital was an endeavour of 54 US based NRI-Oriya doctors with a firm commitment to provide state–of–the-art medicare to fill the void. The hospital is built at a picturesque spot, on 10 acres of land at a height with landscaped gardens conjuring images of hope and happiness. More than 50,000 distinguished patients have been treated during financial year 2010 -11 with low mortality rate. Thanks to the accumulating the expertise of its medical fraternity and employees, this hospital has maintained its motto that the 'patient deserves the best'. With empanelment from numerous health insurance and major corporate houses, the quality of services has been upgraded to suit their requirements and to provide hassle free treatment. The hospital also supports the Kalinga School of Nursing from which 50 nurses graduate each year.

Accreditation
Kalinga Hospital has upgraded the ISO accreditation from ISO: 9001:2000 to ISO: 9001: 2008 and is in initial implementation stages of NABH accreditation.

Cost–Effective Facilities
Kalinga Hospital has a very comprehensive range of services. While renal science services has matured and peaked with more than 150 renal transplants in last few years, the cardiology and cardio thoracic services has increased along with the imaging services which are the best available in Orissa with 1.5 Tesla MRI and 6-slice Spiral CT. Cardiac sciences, neuro surgery services and joint replacement are the most compact and cost – beneficial to patients. It is now stepping up to provide complete range of oncology services. The transfusion medicine services are the most advanced and technically sound. The critical care services are considered the best available and accepted as a referral and training centre in the state.

Advanced Technology
The hospital is well equipped with latest technology in imaging services and regular upgradation of various equipment in cardiac sciences, joint replacement and other departments have provided the opportunity to reduce cost to patients and increase productivity. With the increase in telecommunication facilities, telemedicine has been a boon towards rendering medical services to remote locations. Kalinga Hospital is on the way to establish a need based community – centre approach for promotive and preventive healthcare and disease management services at the doorstep of 51000+villages of the state using contemporary ICT platform and network in PPP mode.

Competition
Kalinga Hospital has sustained itself in the last decade in spite of facing rough weather and competition from other players. “The changed scenario is unlikely to effect us. Firstly, the gap in need and availability is huge and, secondly, we don’t believe in competition. We believe in completion of our task of providing quality healthcare on our own credibility. However, in future due to other commercial and economic balancing, many mid-size hospitals will come up to reap certain amount of financial benefit. There is unlikely a massive growth of tertiary care centres,” says Major General (Dr) Bikash K Mohanti, AVSM (Retd), MD, Kalinga Hospital, Bhubaneswar.

Future Plans
“Our goal is to promote ourselves as a reliable and relevant Hospital. At present we are well balanced with 275 beds. Our emerging concerns are to consolidate our position, and bring in some more value added services to interior and peripheral parts of Orissa. We are committed to provide “cost plus solution and value based operations,” adds Mohanti.

Reaching Out
He further added that presently the hospital has a very limited association with the state government because of their commitment. However they have plans to work with National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in enhancing the provision of medical care to interior of the state though outreach centres facilities, mobile health care services. A successful endeavour of Kalinga Hospital in reaching out to children with cleft lips and cleft palates under the “'Smile Train Programme' at no cost to their families has been able to treat approximately 3000 cases in financial year 2010 – 11.
