About us:
The Micro Insurance Academy (MIA), a project of Sarvajan Unnati Bodhini Charitable Trust, is a not for profit organization fully dedicated to providing technical assistance in microinsurance domain knowledge to organizations that focus on low income communities. With over 40 professionals including researchers, training specialists, economists and development experts, the MIA is the largest microinsurance resource
center globally.

In order to integrate microinsurance with existing financial and social protection frameworks, the MIA works in liaison with partners from the NGO sector, civil society, academia, bilateral and multilateral development agencies, the (re)insurance industry and national governments in several regions of the world.

We have developed a model that empowers poor communities to access and manage financial risks through tailored insurance solutions that match people's needs and ability to pay. We do this through a process that the beneficiaries understand, trust and take responsibility for.

In a nutshell, we're all about “helping communities manage risks from the ground up”.

About the Project:
MIA and BASIX have been mandated by the Climate Change and Development Division (CCD) of the Embassy of Switzerland in India to design and implement a long term intervention project to enhance resilience of vulnerable communities to climate change by developing and testing microinsurance solutions among climate vulnerable communities in India, with a scope of implementing the tested solutions elsewhere.
Participatory microinsurance solutions for crop, livestock, health and disasters risks will be designed in the “Climate Resilience through Risk Transfer – RES-RISK” project.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Health Specialist will work fulltime on the “Climate Resilience through Risk Transfer” project. He/She will functionally report to the Project Leader and organizationally reporting to relevant Departmental Head
. The project aims at enhancing the resilience of vulnerable communities to climate change by developing and
testing microinsurance solutions among climate vulnerable communities in India, with a scope of implementing the tested solutions elsewhere.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Advice on the medical/health issues related to project implementation, in particular effects of climate change on human health in specific locations.
  • Work conceptually on the relationship between health benefits of the insurance schemes and the health care issues.
  • Develop & test the education material for preventive measures for health.
  • Additional duties and tasks, as necessary.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • MBBS or Master’s degree (MPhil preferred) in a relevant field, preferably Economics, Statistics, Sociology or related disciplines, which offers a strong methodological background;
  • 3-5 years of similar experience;
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in English and Hindi;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team- and deliver results within a strict time-line; and
  • Demonstrated high professional and ethical standards
