A new study has suggested that fear of childbirth increases the frequency of emergency and elective caesarean sections despite psychological counselling.Led by Professor Gunilla Sydsjo of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University Hospital in Linkoping, Central Sweden, researchers analysed the antenatal and delivery records of 353 women with the fear of childbirth, and 579 women who didn’t have any such fear.
The researchers found that induction of delivery was more common among the women with fear of childbirth as compared to the women without this problem.
Women with fear of childbirth who were scheduled for vaginal delivery were more often delivered by emergency caesareans and they also more often requested elective caesarean delivery.
The study was published in the international journal Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica (AOGS).
